Some of the domain names were similar to existing web hosting company names (or derivatives of web hosting company names). Others simply had ‘hosting’, ‘host’, or a related term in the domain itself.

So my friend and I were talking and he said something like, “Yeah, it’s a shame – if only I had the time to develop some content for some of these domains then I might make some money form them”. It turns out that he had no content on any of the domains – just parked pages, or no content at all. When I investigated the domains, it turned out that there was a small but steady traffic stream that visited these domains. Some simply typed in the domain, others apparently found the domain through a search engine that had categorized the parked page.

So I suggested the following to him – why not use a service that will take the domain as is – with no content whatsoever – and suggest search options that generate revenue for each click? He took my advice, grudgingly I might add, and guess what? He made $50 the first month from just a few of his domains.

He was so excited that he asked what he might do to further increase his revenues from his domain names. I suggested that he use his parking pages (these can be customized with some hosts) to test banners from affiliate programs with the highest paying hosting companies. He placed only three banners at the top of his pages – with a brief description of the company’s product offerings taken straight from their web sites. This also proved to be a great success – and his revenue stream increased.

My friend has since invested some time and energy in monetizing his other domains. He has either pointed the domains to a pay per click search engine, or listed affiliate links on almost every domain. This has turned a lackluster domain speculation business into a profit generating pay per click and affiliate business that requires almost no effort to maintain. Needless to say, my friend has taken my out to lunch a couple of times since then.

Lately I heard a statistic that the majority of businesses operate at 60% of their potential. While I was unable to obtain the source of that statistic it seemed rather accurate or maybe even high. The Small Business Association reports that “2/3 of new employer firms survive at least 2 years, and about 1/2 survive at least 4 years.” The language they use is almost as scary as the statistics themselves. This article provides tips to help you develop and grow a strong, solid business foundation.

Solid Plan with a Clear Simple Vision- Think of the impact you would like your business to have in the world. Think big! You may never reach your vision but the vision itself is so grand that your team gets excited about it. Then back up and look at what would have to happen to get there. Create a solid plan with realistic short and long term goals.

Focus on Profitability vs. Revenue - While revenue is important, high revenue doesn’t add value if your expenses are just as high. What can you do to create more profit? Possibly develop various streams of income. What expenses could be reduced or eliminated? How can you operate more efficiently? Think profit.

Work “in” and “on” your business - Sometimes we get so caught up in daily tasks “in” our business we forget to step back to take a wider look from the outside. Seeing it through a customer’s eyes. Noticing how it fits into the community. Preparing the future of the company. On the other hand, we can get so comfortable working “on” our business we forget to step in to talk with customers and experience what the employees face on a daily basis.

Automate and Create Systems - What do you need to automate? What system can you put in place that would free up your time or make you more money? What tasks need to be eliminated, systematized, or delegated. What system would help your employees be more effective and provide the best service? Finally, is there a system that needs to be upgraded? Automation and systems help your business be consistent and efficient.

Consistent Marketing Plan - Marketing expert Jay Conrad Levinson of Guerilla Marketing has said that “I hate to admit this, but mediocre marketing with commitment works better than brilliant marketing without commitment.” It is important to have a marketing plan in place that is consistently and persistently being carried out on a daily basis….not just when you need more customers.

Increase Value to Your Customers - Give more than your customers ask for, more than they expect. There are 3 convenience stores by my neighborhood. The first one built I visited regularly and was satisfied. Nothing unique! The second I visited less than a handful of times and had to wait every time to get checked out so haven’t been back in years. Every time I get gas at the third store I am greeted over the intercom with a friendly “Hi, how are you today?”. When we go inside they are friendly and always provide my kids with a free lollipop. They even added a Post Office inside. Who do you think gets my money on a regular basis and with very little effort or money on their part? The one that gives more than I expect. What added value can you provide that will increase your “Wow” factor?

Innovate - React to the customer’s needs before they know they need it. Instead of selling what you want, sell what the customer needs. How do you know what they need? Take time to talk to them. At a minimum talk to your best customers and learn from each one you’ve lost. Find out what they would like and what their challenges are. Stay current on market trends in your industry.

Leadership vs. Management - Empower your staff to manage themselves. Do you really want to spend your time problem solving? Train them well. Make sure they know the vision of the company and they are on board because there is a personal win in place for them. The personal win gives the employee motivation to cooperate as part of the team.

Well Oiled Machine vs. Chaos- Is each section of your business operating efficiently while working together towards the common goal? Or are the members of your team expending time and energy daily putting out fires. What change can you make to shift your business out of crisis/ problem-solving to operating with ease?

Develop YOU! – Take a minute to hold your breath. As you hold your breath think about what you really want. See what happens. Unless you are uniquely talented you probably had trouble thinking about what you want, because your needs were not being met. When you take care of yourself… feel strong, healthy, happy, and have time and space in your life…you can focus on what you want and attract more to your business.

Take one step at a time and build a strong, solid business. Along the way build lots of reserves… time, money, space, revenue sources, future products, etc. and begin filling the gap to your potential.

Start by doing a competitive review to assess their strengths and weaknesses using these techniques:

SWOT analysis – Identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. This type of analysis is an excellent entry point into the growth planning process. It’s fast, inexpensive, gathers input from your entire team and helps to define your vision of success.

Competitor profiling – Create detailed profiles of each of your major competitors. Use public sources to gather in-depth descriptions of their backgrounds, finances, products, markets, facilities, personnel, and strategies.

Media scanning – Reading your competitors’ ads can tell you a lot about your market segment, including: New product offerings, New business branding and market positioning strategies, Marketing budgets, media selection and much more.

From trade shows and patent filings to mutual customers, annual reports, and trade associations, there are a multitude of avenues where you can seek competitive data. Remember, though, research is an ongoing process – your competition is always looking for an advantage, and so should you.

Send business card to as many people as possible. Call your friends and relatives and tell them you have started a business. Visit them and leave a small stack of business cards to hand out to their friends.

Befriend your suppliers and vendors and give them your business card. Ask if they can use your products or service, or if they know anyone who can.

Attend meetings of professional groups, computer user groups and groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, or civic associations. Have business cards in a pocket where they are easily reachable and hand them over during introduction.

Contact nonprofit organizations, schools and colleges, and even other businesses who have customers who may need your services. Ask for some work or leads.

Do networking with others who are doing the same type of work you are. Let them know you are available to handle their work overloads.

Send out sales letters to everyone you think might be able to use what you sell. Be sure to describe your business in terms of how it can help the prospect. Learn to drop a business card in every letter you send out.

Give samples of your product or your work into as many hands as possible.

Offer a free, no obligation consultation to people you think could use your services. During such consultations offer some practical suggestions or ideas — and before you leave ask for an “order” to implement the ideas.

Learn to ask referrals.

Have sales letters, flyers and other pertinent information printed and ready to go.

Run a contest. Make the prize something desirable and related to your business. It could be a free gift basket of your products, for instance, or free services.

Look out for free advertising and take advantage of the opportunity.

In any business, communication is the key to succeed that is why it is important to have the right telephone etiquette. Much of our business communications takes place on the phone: in the office, at home, in the car, virtually anywhere. Proper phone technique can make or break deals or relationships. Here are some guidelines that are very helpful when you use the phone as a power tool.

Greetings – Telephone conversation must start by identifying yourself (and your company). If answering someone else’s line, be sure to include their name in your greeting, so that the other party does not think they have reached a wrong number.

If you are the person making the call, be sure to use proper phone etiquette from the start. You want to be sure to be polite to the “gatekeepers” i.e. Secretaries, receptionists etc. that answer the phone for your business contact, as they are the ones who have the power put you through, (or not) at 4:55 pm on Friday, when their boss is getting ready to leave the office. They may sit outside of the office, but they too have influence and power so a greeting is a bit of etiquette well spent in the long run. Some business relationships, especially in fields like sales and marketing, start or stall right at the front desk.

When you have reached the party, if your call has been expected, remind them of the prior conversation and appointment. People get busy and can seem surprised until you remind them of where they should remember you from. If your call is not expected, unless it will be a short call, ask the party if they have the time for you. If the other person does not have time, briefly state the purpose of your call and ask for an appointment to follow up at a later time.

Keep a phone diary. Have a pencil and pad near the phone and jot notes during phone conversations. This will help you “actively listen” and have a reference for later. Employ active listening noises such as “yes” or “I see” or “great”. This lets the other person know that you care about what they have to say. Recap at the end of the call, using your notes and repeat any resolutions or commitments on either side to be sure you are both “on the same page”.

End the call on a positive note by thanking the other person for their time and express an interest in speaking with them again (if that is true). If not, just let them know you appreciated them speaking with you and end the call.

Whether your business is a work at home Internet business or staffs several hundred in a downtown skyscraper you’re going to be online to succeed, and you’re going to have to come up with a good business name and a good domain name. Here are some things to avoid in naming your work at home online business prior to setting up your Internet site.

The first mistake many new work at home online business owners make is to ask too many people for input. They tend to ask family and friends what their new business name should be, and what domain name it should have. The problem with this is that not everyone will really understand the business idea or the jargon involved in that business. The second reason to avoid doing this is that you can only choose one name. This means that the more people you ask the more people you are going to disappoint – and perhaps even insult.

It is far better to choose a name of your home Internet business by asking the opinion and business help of those few people who have been chosen to have an integral management part of your venture. You might pull these folks together and have a brainstorming session in which the name is chosen. In this way each person will have had a contributing part in determining the name.

If you think of many of the newer work at home Internet business start ups that have grown online to become household names, you’ll see that they all took zingy, snappy, lively names that differentiated themselves from others and weren’t likely to be copied. They didn’t take boring names that could be forgotten or worse yet, confused with other companies. Yahoo is one example. It could have been World Wide Search Engine instead. Google is another. Monster is a great example of a name that is not only memorable but suggestive of high volume, strength, durability and vast reach. Monster could have been Online Job Resource. What blah name that would have been. All these started out as work at home Internet business projects by unknown online entrepreneurs. Their choice of business and Web site names paid a large part in their ability to brand themselves and thus to succeed.

In conclusion it is important to find the right name for your business web site. Be careful to pick one that is appropriate for the business that you are promoting and will be easy for web traffic to remember. Ask the people who are immediately involved with the business to help in the name determination. If possible pick a name domain where .com can be used. This is the most common for people to remember.

Any business should take advantage of business blog because it’s easy and quick to make. A blog is simple to set up even for the technologically challenged. There are a number of free blogging services, and while these aren’t ideal for a business blog they offer a way to start. Setting up a blog isn’t like setting up a website. In the worst case scenario you’ll have to install a software application on your website and tinker with a few settings.

Inexpensive Setup – To integrate a blog into the page of your site costs little, especially since someone within your organization can usually do it. Even outsourcing the task will cost only a couple hundred dollars. A blog could become one of the most powerful marketing weapons you have in your arsenal and the money you spend might just pay a salesperson for one day’s work.

Easy Access – Anyone who has an Internet connection can access your company right at their fingertips. You may also have the option to restrict your website to certain users for security purposes. A blog gives the business the ability to inform your customers of any changes, new products, latest offers and much more. This, in turn, can lead to direct sales. Captivated and compelling content can provide growing list of market leads.

Search Engine Friendly – Search engine optimization is a particularly beneficial form of online marketing. It can be used to gain search engine traffic for given keywords or search terms. Your blog offers the opportunity to promote your website for hundreds or even thousands of different keywords. Search engines particularly like promoting blogs because they offer a large amount of content that is updated and added to on a regular basis.

Global exposure. Having a website will bring your business to the global audience. This means a website will place your company on the Internet where billions of users online can access

Brand Awareness – The more a customer hears the name of your company the greater the chance of remembering it. It takes, on average, around seven items of direct communication between you and your customers to make a sale. A blog with hundreds of posts gives you the opportunity to mention the company name and ensure that your readers think of you next time they’re looking for a particular product or service.

Using the principles of the Law of Attraction to strengthen our leadership and consciously use it in our personal and professional endeavors will not only attract more success to us it will allow us to be of service to others and make a valuable contribution. So, here are some Rules to make the Law of Attraction work for you:

Decide what you want.

Write it down on a piece of paper (and put an ad in the newspaper.)

Imagine what it would look like when it arrives.

Decide where you are going to put it when it arrives.

Imagine what it will feel like when you touch it.

Imagine how excited you will be and what your friends and family will say when they see your manifestation.

Start celebrating the completion even before it arrives.

Go into gratitude as if you already have this dream accomplished.

The first thing that needs to be done when thinking of franchising is to develop a sound plan. This plan must take into consideration the numerous issues confronting a new franchisor: speed of growth, territorial development, support service, staffing, and fee structure. Larger companies need to address more complex issues such as channel conflict, anti-trust and resources allocation issues.

After which comes the need for proper legal documentation. The franchisor will need a franchise contract to protect them from different issues. Basically, there are literally hundreds of different business issues that must be address in a good franchise agreement. And the decisions that they come up dictates the franchisor’s success.

Then, franchisor must develop a highly developed operations manual. This manual must contain not only the systems to be used, but also the checklists, policies, procedures, and tactics that will allow these systems to be uniformly enforced.

Lastly, franchisor must learn how to market and sell franchises. They must learn how to attract the prospective buyer and know the necessary materials that will help them make a sale. It also needs to be educated in proper sales, disclosure and compliance technique.
