While customers are becoming more savvy, many don’t speak ‘tech-ese,’ and they still are baffled by terms such as routers, IPSEC, T-1s, WIFI, and broadband. While these buyers may have a genuine interest and need for the products they investigate, more often than not their sales experience ends up a frustrating and confusing one.</p>
<p><em>Don&#8217;t Talk Tech -</em> salespeople are often caught in the hype for their own products. It’s easy to lose touch with a client’s perspective with this approach. The other major blunder a tech salesperson may make is their need to be perceived as experts in their field. Talking tech to the point of no return does not usually yield a promising sale. How does one handle the tendency in tech sales to “show up and throw up?&#8221; It is critical to address ineffective sales approaches in the tech market, because these mistakes are often the most significant barriers to high performance.</p>
<p><em>Communicate Don&#8217;t Baffle -</em> bringing the human side to selling high tech products is not easy, but it must enter into the equation or else a salesperson’s success is at risk. Communicating with clients, not baffling them, is key to building long-term relationships. Technology is evolving, and the customer needs to become aware of the new technology and not be intimidated by it.</p>
<p><em>Focus on Client Needs -</em> I conduct high technology sales training throughout the United States for a variety of clients. For sales professionals in the high tech field, I often stress the need to shift the focus from the salesperson to the client. <span id="more-1607"></span>This is difficult, because products are complex, and sales people get caught up in the innovation and creativity the product may provide rather than focusing on the client’s needs. Typically, a salesperson approaches the client with a laundry list of questions or a lengthy Powerpoint presentation. Sometimes the questions are canned, or the presentation is a reflection of the salesperson’s agenda. The questions or presentation are designed to steer the conversation towards the highlights of the products for sale or the expertise of the salesperson.</p>
<p><em>Turn the Tone from an Interview to a Conversation -</em> instead of assuming knowledge of the client’s needs, I recommend a salesperson begin the first meeting by asking the client about their expectations. I also advise them to cancel the list of leading questions. Replace this with a list of results the client desires and their potential business challenges. Shifting the focus from the salesperson to the client will change the tone of the meeting from an interview to a conversation.</p>
<p><em>Ask the Right Questions -</em> the art of selling is still about asking good questions. They simply must be framed with a different purpose. Try building in questions that put the client in the driver’s seat. For example, ‘What would you like to learn more about?’ or “How can I help resolve these issues?’ These questions can generate a host of answers that relate back to the product and the solutions technology offers.</p>
<p>Shortened presentations that focus on companies’ capabilities and how to expand them through technology help close deals. Info dumps are a bore and can even damage the sale process because the customer is not engaged. If high tech salespeople lose themselves in touting the capabilities of the product, they lose their most distinguishing feature – themselves.</p>

The format of the accounts is the personal decision of the proprietor and can be a full set of annual accounts including profit and loss account and balance sheet including using control accounts and cash and bank records and the self assessment tax return.</p>
<p>An appropriate accounting system for many self employed business would not be to prepare a full set of annual accounts but instead to prepare a simple income and expenditure account. Preparing an income and expenditure account allows a much simpler accounting or bookkeeping system where simple accounting software can be used.</p>
<p>The objective of any bookkeeping software being to maintain accurate financial records and produce the accounting records and totals required to complete the inland revenue self assessment tax return each year. Financial control is very important and the bookkeeping software should also produce regular financial statements showing the profit and loss of the business throughout the accounting trading periods.</p>
<p>The financial tax year varies depending upon which country business is conducted. In the US accounts are prepared during an accounting period from 1 January to 31 December each year. In the UK the standard financial year adopted by the inland revenue is from 6 April each year to the 5 April the following year.</p>
<p>In the UK tax rules are set for each financial year and by adopting the standard tax year a small business can benefit by preparing the financial accounts under a single set of tax rules and preparing the self assessment tax return accordingly. Adopting a different financial period involves straddling the official tax year and more than one set of tax rules might be applicable to the tax calculation resulting from the net profit being declared.<span id="more-1592"></span></p>
<p>After choosing the April to April financial tax year accounts are required to be submitted by the submission deadline of 31 January the following year. Earlier submission is recommended as by submitting the final accounts and tax returns online by 31 October each year the inland revenue will calculate the income tax and national insurance payable.</p>
<p>When a self employed business has been in business for two or three years and has chosen a different 12 month accounting period to the financial tax year the 12 month tax is calculated according to a basis period. Up until that point the accounts may be subject to apportionment to calculate the tax due.</p>
<p>The basis period under which the business tax is calculated is the 12 month accounting period ending in the specific tax year. A business which has a 12 month trading period ending 31 December 2007 would be taxed under the basis period 2007 to 2008 being the basis period 6 April 2007 to 5 April 2008. The same rules apply if the accounting periods are shorter or longer than the standard 12 month period.</p>
<p>If the accounting date is changed by a sole trader the inland revenue are informed of the change on the self assessment tax return and the re3asons for the change. If as a result the self assessment tax return arrives late the tax will be assessed on the previous basis period.</p>
<p>Changing an accounting date that overlaps two basis years results in the business being taxed twice for the same accounting profit as the business would be taxed under both basis years. The extra tax paid can be highly unwelcome but can be reclaimed at a later date through the self assessment tax return.</p>
<p>The penalty for late submission of the self assessment tax return in the UK is 100 pounds and interest is also charged on any outstanding income tax and national insurance from the first day after submission was due.</p>

<p>Think about your company. What personality or image do you want to present to customers and prospects? Should it be warm, friendly, and down-to-earth? Polished, knowledgeable, and sophisticated?</p>
<p>Does your company’s current logo and literature design reflect the image you want to present? Is your company&#8217;s personality presented consistently in all forms of communication? Are you overwhelmed now? Let me simplify. There are four key steps in brand management:</p>
<ul>
<li>Positioning &#8211; identify your company&#8217;s unique benefits and image.</li>
<li>Planning &#8211; develop a road map for your brand identity programs.</li>
<li>Protection &#8211; guard the integrity of your brand.</li>
<li>Promotion &#8211; build awareness of and preference for your brand.</li>
</ul>
<p>Brand management is an ongoing process, not a destination. Bad news: the work is never done. Good news: if you do the positioning and planning up front, protection and promotion programs flow naturally.</p>

Timesheets are the usual method for tracking time you spent working and thus are the key to timely invoice generation. Timely invoice generation and dispatch is important for two reasons:</p>
<ul>
<li>You are more likely to get paid for your services the closer you present the invoice for payment to the time you did the work.</li>
<li>Poor cash flow kills more businesses than poor profitability.</li>
</ul>
<p>Timesheets used to be monthly, then weekly, daily, and now can be updated to the minute. A timesheet software package like Timesheets MTS or Timesheets Lite is simple to administer, is simple for the casual user to enter time, and most importantly is simple for the accounts department to use and generate the reports they need for prompt invoicing.</p>
<p>So, throw out those papers based timesheet systems, throw out the spreadsheet timesheet systems that the wheels are falling of off, and move to a modern timesheet software system today. When you have a system be vigilant! Make sure your people are accurate and timely with their entries, and make sure accounts are prompt in issuing invoices! <p>In terms of creating your competitive advantage your description should go far beyond this basic list of products/services. It must also include the way you do business, and what business benefits your customers derive from your products or services, and from doing business with you. What are you really selling?</p>
<p>Under normal circumstances competitive advantage grows in direct relation to the number of things you can offer that your competitors cannot. Good research will tell you where the opportunities are to increase your competitive advantage. Develop your business by emphasizing your strengths, in terms the customer/client can appreciate.</p>
<p>Traditionally, in sales and marketing, this perspective is referred to as translating features into benefits. The easiest way to translate a feature into a benefit is to add the prompt &#8216;which means that&#8230;&#8217;. For example, if a strong feature of a business is that it has 24-hour opening, this feature would translate into something like: &#8220;We&#8217;re open 24 hours (the feature) which means that you can get what you need when you need it &#8211; day or night.&#8221; (the benefit). Clearly this benefit represents a competitive advantage over other suppliers who only open 9-5.<span id="more-1454"></span></p>
<p>The important thing is to understand your services and proposition in terms that your customer will recognize as being relevant and beneficial to them.
