Almost every year, managers from every industry conduct performance appraisal of employees. This is the standard procedure taken that is important when making decisions about promotions, compensation, additional training or firing. Here are the do’s and don’ts of doing performance appraisal.
DON’T attack the employee personally. Critically evaluate his or her work.
DO follow sufficient time, without distractions, for appraisal. (Take the phone off the hook or close the office door.)
DON’T make the employee fee uncomfortable or uneasy. Never conduct an appraisal where other employees are present.
Do include the employee in the process as much as possible. (Let the employee prepare a self-improvement program.
DON’t wait until the appraisal address problems with the employees’ work that have been developing for some time.
Do end the appraisal with positive suggestions for employee improvement.
