record keeping in small businesses

record keeping in small businessesSmall-business owners often say that the most important assistant they received in starting and managing the business involved accounting. A business person who sets up an effective accounting system early will save much grief later. Computers make record keeping much easier and enable a small business owner to follow the progress of the business (sales, expenses, profits) on a daily basis. An inexpensive computer system can also help owners with other record-keeping chores, such as inventory control, customer records and payroll.

A good accountant is invaluable in setting up such systems and showing you how to keep the system operating smoothly. Many business failures are caused by poor accounting practices. A good accountant can help make decisions such as where to buy or lease equipment and whether to own or rent the building. Help may also be provided for tax planning, financial forecasting, choosing sources of financing, and writing up requests for funds.

Just like large businesses, small business owners must have the right data storage devices other than their computers. It is important to buy memory to have a back up in cases where data are lost or corrupted. This way, the business won’t find itself in several problems arising from data lost.
