42-15529600As the business grows, it becomes impossible for an entrepreneur to oversee every detail, even if he or she is putting in 60 hours per week. This means that hiring, training and motivating employees is critical.

It is not easy to find good, qualified help when the owner offer less money, skimpier benefits and less room for advancement than larger firms do. That is one reason employee relation is such an important part of small-business management. Employees of small companies are often more satisfied with their jobs than their counterparts in big businesses. Quite often they find their jobs more challenging, their ideas more accepted, and their bosses more respectful.

Often entrepreneurs reluctantly face the reality that to keep growing, they must delegate authority to others. This can be a particularly touchy issue in small businesses with long-term employees, and in family business. Entrepreneurs who have built their companies from scratch often feel compelled to promote employees who have been with them from the start – even when those employees aren’t qualified to serve as managers. Common sense probably tells you this could be detrimental to the business.

The same can be true to family-run businesses that are expanding. Attitude such as “you can’t fire a family” or you must promote certain workers because “they’re family” can hinder growth. Entrepreneurs can be best served themselves and the business if they gradually recruit and groom employees for management positions. By doing this, entrepreneurs can enhance trust and support of the manager among other employees and themselves.
